Ted Turner

MUSIC SHOTDAVID ALAN TURNER was born in Sheldon, England on August 2nd 1950. He started playing the Guitar at the age of 16, eighteen months later he was playing in a band called KING BISCUIT (Local boys from the neighborhood playing the blues).

1968 – Ted’s first audition was for JON HISEMAN. Jon (drums) had recently played for JOHN MAYALL BLUESBREAKERS band, with DICK HECKSALL SMITH (tenor sax), who would play two saxophones at the same time in harmony and TONY REEVES (bass).  They then left to form a progressive jazz rock band called COLOSSEUM.

1969 – Summer:  TED answered an ad in MELODY MAKER (one of only two U.K. music magazines at that time) and auditioned for a new, as yet un-named, band. Another young guitarist named ANDY POWELL answered the same ad. The organizers of the band MARTIN TURNER (Bass) and STEVE UPTON (Drums) could not choose between the TED or MARTIN, and decided to keep them both. (Interesting thought process they were looking for a keyboard player and one guitar player…the norm) Their twin lead guitar attack became the trademark of the band, which was ultimately known as WISHBONE ASH.

WISHBONE ASH is considered to be the major innovators of the harmony twin lead guitar format. A band respected and admired by musicians and fans alike for their distinctive and innovative music, their pioneering and original sounds have influenced many, including the EAGLES (Hotel California), STEELY DAN (reeling in the years), IRON MAIDEN, THIN LIZZIE (the boys are back in town), LYNARD SKYNARD (Free bird), and others. The Guitar interplay between TED and ANDY is legendary.  These attributes have resulted in TED and ANDY being voted “two of the ten most important guitarists in ROCK HISTORY” (Traffic Magazine, 1989), and rated among the “Top 20 guitarists of all time….” (Rolling Stone).

“TED TURNER and ANDY POWELL are probably the most interesting two-guitar team since the days when BECK and PAGE graced the YARDBIRDS.” (Melody Maker-June 1972.)

The fifth member of the the band and manager was MILES COPELAND.  His guidance and energy were important to the success of the band.  MILES was the eldest brother of IAN and STEWART.  STEWART COPELAND later became the drummer and founder of THE POLICE.

WISHBONE would rehearse in the basement of the Copeland residence in London for weeks at a time, developing their musical style with support from the whole family. MILES used the success of WISHBONE, to develop his empire, notably I.R.S. records, managing the POLICE, and STING.

Majella

MUSIC SHOTMAJELLA began her Singing/Songwriting career in her early teens, appearing in Songwriting Festivals throughout the U.K. such as Ronnie Scott’s, Birmingham, which is also her hometown.  Performing alongside  established and popular artists such as Glenn Tilbrook provided a sound learning ground for an aspiring ‘unknown’ who had been described as ‘the next Judy Collins’.

Her drive to both write and perform, was subsequently developed whilst studying Dramatic Arts at Bretton Hall in West Yorkshire. The college was renowned for producing well known actors, directors and writers such as the English dramatist John Godber and, therefore, offered the opportunity to be inspired by the best.

After graduating, she was cast in the title role of Willy Russell’s stage play, ‘Educating Rita’. A poignant role in that when asked by Frank (a middle aged professor at the university) what she would like to learn, Rita answers ‘everything’.  Majella was ready to grow and continued to be cast in a wide range of roles to grant my wish. Some of my favorites include; Lady Macbeth (who has been described as one of the most powerful female characters in literature) and Mary Magdalene (whom she interpreted as the wife of Jesus). She found that playing a strong character who breaks the mold was extremely  liberating because she was able to leave aside her own conditioning and become more aware of what drives the rebel, which she believe exists within us all.

Being part of school tours and leading workshops, brought about a change of direction. She was drawn to theatre-in-education and so trained formally as a teacher of Drama. It was during this time that she founded a Community Theatre Company and earned her first writing commission. This time she would be required to adopt the additional roles of writer and producer. Bin World is a children’s musical that addresses the reduce-re-use-recycle initiative. M. C. Crisp Rapper is staging revenge on humans who literally, trash our planet and it is up to Professor Poop to intervene. Park Strife explores perceptions of youth anti-social behavior and Drug Love depicts teen dating abuse stories. In The Forest Calls, I examine healthy lifestyles for young people, through their innate connection with nature. All my theatre work, attempts to bridge the gap between gritty real life and fantasy.

Having recently married Ted Turner and moved to the U.S. we are now recording our first collaborative album which is due for release later in 2016.
